Cookie Policy

What is stored on your device, why, and how to change your mind.

Last updated: 2 November 2026

Draft for approval. Items marked to be confirmed are placeholders rather than final policy wording, and must be agreed before this page is published.

This policy should be read with our Privacy Policy. It explains the cookies and similar storage this website uses, which of them are essential, and which only run if you agree.

1. Cookies and similar storage

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to store. Similar technologies include local storage, which keeps a value in your browser without sending it with every request. Both can recognise your device on a later visit. UK PECR rules require your consent for anything that is not strictly necessary.

2. Essential and optional: the difference

Essential storage is needed for the site and its forms to work, and to remember this choice. It is always on, because without it the site cannot function.

Optional storage is everything else. On this site there are two optional categories: analytics and live chat. Both start switched off, and neither loads until you say yes.

4. Essential (always on)

jca_cookie_consent

Local storage in your browser (not a cookie, not sent to us)

Remembers the choice you make in the cookie banner so we do not ask on every page. Set only after you choose.

Lasts: About six months, after which we ask again

to be confirmed: cookie name

Cookie set by our website platform (Base44)

Keeps a signed-in session alive, and protects forms against cross-site request forgery. Only set for staff who sign in to the password-protected admin area; ordinary visitors browsing the site are never signed in.

Lasts: to be confirmed: duration

5. Analytics (optional)

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages and tours people find useful, so we can improve the site. It is loaded only if you allow analytics, and we have switched on IP anonymisation and switched off advertising features.

_ga

Cookie set by Google Analytics 4

Tells one visitor apart from another so we can count visits and see which tours and pages are useful. Loaded only after you allow analytics.

Lasts: to be confirmed: duration

_ga_<container id>

Cookie set by Google Analytics 4

Keeps session state for our specific GA4 measurement. It is not used for advertising, and advertising storage is always denied on this site.

Lasts: to be confirmed: duration

Withdrawing consent sets analytics storage back to “denied” and deletes the Google Analytics cookies this site set. Google’s own documentation lists the exact cookie lifetimes, and they can also be shortened in our GA4 settings to be confirmed: current GA4 data retention setting.

Google also offers a browser add-on that blocks Google Analytics across all websites: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

6. Live chat (optional)

Our live chat is provided by Tawk.to. The widget, its scripts and its cookies load only after you allow live chat; if you decline, no request is made to Tawk.to and no chat bubble appears. You can still reach us by email at peter@dorsetexplore.co.uk or through the contact form.

to be confirmed: cookie name

Cookies and local storage set by Tawk.to

Keeps your chat session open, remembers the conversation if you move between pages, and identifies a returning visitor to the chat widget. Nothing from Tawk.to loads unless you allow live chat.

Lasts: to be confirmed: duration

Withdrawing consent removes the widget and deletes the chat cookies it set in your browser.

7. No advertising cookies

We do not run advertising, remarketing or social media pixels on this site, and we do not build advertising profiles of visitors. If that ever changes, we will ask for your consent first and update this policy.

8. Changing your mind, and browser controls

The quickest way is the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page, or the button above. Rejecting a category stops it and clears what it left behind.

You can also delete or block cookies in your browser settings, and use a private window so nothing is kept after you close it. Blocking essential storage may stop parts of the site, such as the booking request form, from working properly.

9. Other providers' notices

Google and Tawk.to are responsible for their own cookies once loaded. Their privacy and cookie notices explain what they do with the information they collect:

  • Google: policies.google.com/privacy
  • Tawk.to: see the privacy and cookie notices published on tawk.to to be confirmed: confirm the exact cookie names and lifetimes from your Tawk.to account

10. Changes to this policy

If we add or remove a cookie or a purpose, we will update this page and the date at the top. Where the change needs your consent, we will ask again.
