About Corfe Castle

Corfe Castle was built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, though there had been a fortress on the site since Saxon times. It stood as a royal castle for centuries and was a key stronghold during the medieval period. In the English Civil War, the castle was held for the King by Lady Mary Bankes and survived two sieges before being captured through treachery in 1646. The Parliamentarians then partially destroyed the castle to prevent it being used again, leaving the dramatic ruins we see today.

The castle is managed by the National Trust and is one of Dorset's most visited historic sites. The ruins sit on a steep hill above the picturesque village of Corfe Castle, with panoramic views across the Purbeck countryside. The village itself, with its stone cottages, pubs, and tea rooms, is one of the most charming in Dorset.
